Why health insurance matters for driver-partners and their families – Bolt
For many ride-hailing driver-partners, every day on the road is about more than completing trips, it’s about providing for the families who depend on them. Yet with the rising cost of healthcare in Nigeria, a single medical emergency can place significant financial strain on a household, making access to affordable health insurance increasingly important.
Bolt says that while conversations around supporting driver-partners often focus on earnings, driver wellbeing deserves equal attention. Access to affordable healthcare not only protects drivers but also provides peace of mind for the families who rely on them.
Earlier this year, Bolt partnered with Bastion Health to introduce discounted health insurance plans for its driver-partners across Nigeria. The programme enables drivers to access affordable healthcare while extending coverage to their immediate family members, helping to reduce the financial burden that unexpected medical expenses can create.
According to Teddy Appa-Dankyi, Senior General Manager, Bolt West Africa, supporting drivers should go beyond helping them earn an income.
“Driver-partners are at the heart of everything we do, and supporting them means looking beyond the road. Many drivers are the primary providers for their families, so their wellbeing has a direct impact on the people who depend on them. We believe health insurance shouldn’t be viewed as an optional benefit, it is an important part of helping drivers build more secure and resilient lives.”
He added that as Nigeria’s cost of living continues to rise, access to affordable healthcare has become increasingly important for working families.
“Healthcare costs can be difficult to manage, particularly when unexpected medical needs arise. By making discounted health insurance available to our driver-partners and their families, we’re helping remove one of the barriers to accessing quality healthcare. It’s about giving drivers greater peace of mind so they can focus on what they do best while knowing their loved ones also have access to care when they need it.”
The health insurance programme provides eligible driver-partners and their immediate family members with access to a range of healthcare services through Bastion Health’s provider network, reinforcing Bolt’s broader commitment to supporting driver wellbeing beyond earning opportunities.
Bolt says initiatives such as affordable health insurance reflect the company’s long-term approach to building a more sustainable platform, one that supports driver-partners not only through technology and flexible earning opportunities but also through programmes that contribute to their overall wellbeing.
Driver-partners interested in enrolling in the health insurance programme can obtain more information through the Bolt Reward section of the Driver app.
