Ibomites: A People Who Embody Passion, Industry, and Excellence – A PR Narrative – By Kenneth Adejumoh

I am not one to jump into every trending conversation on our social landscape. However, the recent statements by a certain cleric concerning the people of Akwa Ibom State were unexpected, especially coming from a sermon. His remarks painted a demeaning and inaccurate picture of a people known across Nigeria for warmth, resilience, creativity, and an unmatched spirit of enterprise.

While such comments are unfortunate, they are also a reminder that limited awareness often leads to limited perspectives. Akwa Ibom State has produced and continues to produce some of the finest men and women who shine brilliantly in various fields, both at home and globally.

This is where the power of Public Relations (PR) comes in. PR focuses on reputation building and management for individuals, communities, and institutions (public or private). It teaches not only what to say, but also how and where to say it. More importantly, PR provides the tools for crisis resolution, turning potentially negative narratives into win‑win outcomes.

In responding to the backlash that naturally followed the cleric’s remarks, a PR‑driven approach is simple: amplify the truth about Akwa Ibom, a state rich with talent, creativity, innovation, and industrious people. These traits echo the spirit behind the slogan, “Land of Promise.”

Let’s highlight just a few proud ambassadors of Akwa Ibom who dominate Nigeria’s cultural and economic landscape:

  • Veekee James (Ruth Erikan), a fashion designer, gospel singer, and entrepreneur; founder of Veekee James Man and Shoperikan, two thriving fashion brands shaping contemporary Nigerian style.
  • Nathaniel Bassey is one of Nigeria’s most respected gospel music ministers, known for inspiring worship songs and the globally followed Hallelujah Challenge prayer movement.
  • Moses Bliss, an energetic gospel singer with a growing global footprint; founder of Shades of Bliss clothing line and host of the popular Bliss Experience concert.
  • Nse Ikpe-Etim – One of Nollywood’s most gifted actresses with remarkable range and over a decade of stellar performances.
  • Hilda Baci – Renowned chef, TV personality, restaurateur, and two‑time Guinness World Record holder, famous for her mission to project Nigerian cuisine to the world and inspire young African women.
  • Prudent Gabriel – Award‑winning fashion designer and CEO of Prudential Styling and Prudent Gabriel Atelier, the largest fashion school in Africa. Her inspiring story spans from waitress to industry powerhouse.
  • Young Jonn (John Saviours Udomboso) – One of Nigeria’s hottest music producers turned artiste, originally from Akwa Ibom.
  • BNXN (Buju) – Daniel Benson – A leading contemporary music sensation with roots in Akwa Ibom.
  • MC Galaxy (Innocent Udeme Udofot) – Singer and entertainer who rose to fame after winning the 2012 Davido Dance Competition.
  • Ini Edo (Iniobong Edo Ekim) – Iconic Nollywood actress, producer, entrepreneur, and star of over 100 films.

In sports; especially football, the heartbeat of many Nigerian streets. Akwa Ibom has produced remarkable talents including Vincent Enyeama, Bassey Akpan, Emem Uduok, William Troost‑Ekong, Etim Esin, Mfon Udoh, Nsikan Isaac, Angela Samuda, Mimi Chaka, and others.

Nollywood also boasts of stars like Mbong Amata, Eve Esin, Inem Peters, Didi Ekanem, and the legendary Regina Askia, who became a household name in the 1990s with her role in the blockbuster Most Wanted.

On a more personal note, my professional journey and in my social cycle, I interact with several exceptional Ibomites whose ambition and discipline continue to impress me. Ayo Essien, a brilliant web designer and digital strategist; Goddie Ofose, a distinguished journalist and Editor-in-Chief of The Industry Newspaper; Sarah Asuquo, a young professional in a Big Four audit firm; and Hope Akpan, a passionate healthcare practitioner in caregiving.

In the oil & gas and manufacturing sectors, Akwa Ibom professionals are driving innovation, promoting local content, and flying Nigeria’s flag on the global stage. The state’s resourceful citizens are shaping enterprises, industries, and communities in remarkable ways.

With these few points, I hope to reshape the narrative: When you think of Akwa Ibom, think beyond stereotypes. Every state has a full spectrum of people across society’s value chain, but Akwa Ibom has consistently proven itself a land of talent, passion, and excellence.

Ibomites like the people of other states do not just exist; they excel. They do not just participate; they lead. They are not just known; they are admired.
