How MTN Nigeria Staff Spent Over 3,947 Volunteer Hours Giving Back to the Community

The Y’ello Care 2025 initiative, an MTN staff volunteer programme which concluded on June 21, has delivered impact, reaching thousands of direct beneficiaries and millions of indirect beneficiaries in Nigeria. This year’s program, focused on ‘Connecting at the Roots,’ has set new benchmarks for community engagement and digital transformation across the nation.
In just 21 days, the Y’ello Care program successfully reached over 8,932 direct beneficiaries. This extensive reach spanned across various critical sectors, including local communities, educational institutions, faith based groups, and health centres, demonstrating a holistic approach to societal development. The initiative’s ability to penetrate diverse segments of society underscores its effectiveness in addressing widespread needs and fostering inclusive growth.
The success of Y’ello Care 2025 is largely attributed to the commitment of its human capital. A remarkable force of over 1,145 staff and volunteer facilitators actively participated in the program, conducting sessions across 18 divisions and numerous national sessions.
Their efforts and dedication were pivotal in delivering the program’s objectives directly to the people who needed them most. In a mere three weeks, more than 3,947 volunteer hours were committed. The staff’s dedication was reflected in the words of hope from Uto Ukpanah at the Pacelli School for the Blind & Partially Sighted Children in Surulere this June. Ukpanah is the Company Secretary, MTN Nigeria: “You can be anything you want to be.” She went on to say, “At MTN, we believe that everyone deserves the benefit of a modern connected life, and that includes those who are visually impaired, because accessibility is important. If we have a connected Nigeria, a connected Africa, then indeed the future will be brighter than today.”
Beyond the direct human interaction, the programme made significant material contributions. The program facilitated the donation of over 86 desktop computers and 133 learning devices, providing essential tools for digital literacy and education. Connectivity was also a major focus, with over 400 connectivity tools, including routers and MiFi devices, deployed to enhance internet access in underserved areas. Furthermore, thousands of branded kits, educational supplies, and business support items were distributed, offering practical assistance and resources to Nigerians.
MTNers (staff of MTN) also laid crucial groundwork for sustainable development through strategic infrastructure and economic interventions. The installation of solar power infrastructure in selected schools ensures long-term access to Information and Communication Technology (ICT), promoting self-sufficiency. Financial grants and Point of Sale (POS) devices were provided to local entrepreneurs through MoMo-led interventions, stimulating local economies. Grassroots artisans also received significant support and visibility, connecting them to broader markets and opportunities. Also, the Human Resources department organised well-attended trade and talent fairs for communities in Lagos, with artisans receiving laptops that will improve the quality of their businesses.
Beyond the above, the company plans to deploy retrofitted containers in several rural locations in Nigeria in the coming weeks. These containers are designed to help bridge the digital divide by providing solar-powered facilities equipped with digital libraries, computers, access to MTN’s skills academy program, and unlimited internet access.
Y’ello Care 2025 has not only delivered impressive numbers but has also woven a narrative of empowerment, collaboration, and sustainable progress. The program’s comprehensive approach, combining technological provisions with dedicated human effort, has created a lasting positive impact, reinforcing the vision of a digitally inclusive society.
