STEM Africa fest 2026 inspires the next generation of African innovators in Lagos

STEM Africa Fest 2026 convened over 3,800 children, parents, educators and STEM enthusiasts in Lagos on 18 July 2026, advancing the theme “Building Future Innovators” through interactive workshops spanning science, engineering, coding, and AI. The event, which was established in 2021, fostered hands-on learning in drone technology, chess, mental math, and traditional Adire design, connecting youth with industry mentorship for future STEM careers.
Since its launch in 2021, the festival has grown into one of Africa’s leading experiential STEM learning platforms, bringing together over 20,000 children, parents, educators and industry professionals around a simple idea: children learn best by doing. With Africa possessing the world’s youngest population and a rapidly evolving digital economy, fostering early, hands-on critical thinking and problem-solving skills through experiential STEM learning matters now more than ever.
Across Africa, conversations about preparing our young ones for the future often border on digital skills, artificial intelligence and innovation. Top of which is innovation, but it is rarely developed by listening alone. It grows through curiosity, experimentation, and the confidence to ask questions like “What happens if I try this?” While classrooms provide the foundation, experiences that allow children to test ideas, solve problems and make discoveries help to transform simple knowledge into lasting understanding. STEM Africa Fest was created to provide exactly that kind of environment.
Rather than treating science and technology as subjects to be studied, this year’s festival encouraged children to interact with education in exciting, practical, and relevant ways. Every activity was designed to move learning beyond theory, giving participants the opportunities to build, create, question and imagine.
Festival Highlights
The 2026 STEM Fest helped this year’s participants to stretch their minds beyond classroom lessons as they explored the following subjects with hands-on participation.
- Science Learning Labs: Everyday classroom concepts came to life as the children carried out practical experiments. They observed chemical reactions firsthand and discovered that science is often best understood by doing.
- Engineering Corner: The kids explored the principles behind engineering and machine design to encourage them to picture how everyday inventions are built, how they can be improved and what they can do to contribute to developing them.
- Coding Bootcamp: The interactive coding sessions introduced the children to the foundation classes of websites, mobile applications and software development, opening their minds to programming concepts for beginners.
- AI Masterclass: Creativity met technology as participants used artificial intelligence to evaluate stories; which demonstrated that innovation is driven by imagination as much as technical ability.
- Drone Technology Experience: The children also explored how drones are used across industries such as agriculture, healthcare, logistics and environmental monitoring, while considering how similar technologies could solve challenges within their own communities.
- Chess in Slums Africa: Chess sessions strengthened their strategic thinking, patience and decision-making, reminding the kids that innovation begins with learning how to think through problems.
- Abacus Mental Mathematics: Fast-paced mental arithmetic activities challenged participants to improve concentration, speed, and analytical thinking in an engaging and interactive way.
- Adire Creative Workshop: The participants explored traditional textile design through practical Adire-making sessions, discovering how creativity, culture and entrepreneurship can work together to create value.
- Maltina STEM Trivia: Scientific knowledge was put to the test in an energetic quiz session that encouraged teamwork, confidence, and a healthy spirit of competition.
- Young Innovators Inspiration Wall: A dedicated showcase celebrated remarkable young innovators through photographs and stories of their achievements. Some of these include the genius invention of the Braille writing system by Louise Braille, the invention of the Hand Swim Fins by Benjamin Franklin, and the invention of Popsicle by Frank Epperson.
Beyond these learning spaces, the festival also created opportunities for children and parents to interact with professionals across science, technology and innovation, opening conversations about future careers and the many pathways available within the STEM ecosystem. Those moments reinforced an important message: Innovation is not reserved for a select few; it begins wherever curiosity is encouraged, and potential is given room to grow.
